Understanding Sharps and Associated Risks
Sharps, a term which refers to objects or devices with sharp corners, edges, or projections, are primarily comprised of needles, syringes, and blades. These objects pose a significant challenge to public safety and environmental conservation.
The problem with sharps is twofold. On one hand, they represent a direct threat to public health—improperly disposed sharps can lead to potential injuries and transmit life-threatening diseases such as Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and HIV. On the other hand, these objects can negatively impact our environment, contaminating our soil and water sources if not discarded responsibly.
It’s essential to underscore that mishandling sharps can result in needlestick injuries that leave individuals susceptible to various diseases. These risks aren’t limited to healthcare workers—anyone exposed to improperly disposed sharps in public spaces can become a victim. In 2018, the World Health Organization reported that 15% of all healthcare workers around the globe experience needlestick injuries, amounting to nearly three million cases.
From an environmental perspective, sharps that find their way into public landfills or water bodies lead to pollution, affecting both wildlife and plant life. These effects compound over time, disrupting ecosystems and fundamentally altering the balance of our natural world. We recognise these risks and focus on practical solutions.
81%
Needlestick Injuries
An alarming 81% of needlestick injuries are caused by improperly disposed of disposable syringes, affecting not only healthcare environments but also the wider community. This issue not only increases environmental pollution but significantly threatens public health and safety.
42%%
Hepatitis C
The majority of Hepatitis C carriers remain undiagnosed. The prevalence of Hepatitis C in intravenous drug users has been estimated to be between 3% and 42%. The risk of contracting Hepatitis C through a needlestick injury is 3% if the donor is infected. We aim to remove that risk.
24%
Disposal Related
Nearly a quarter of needlestick injuries are related to disposal issues, underscoring the critical need for robust waste management strategies to protect public health and our environment.
